About us
From the National Physical Laboratory to the factory floor
K3Metrology was founded to commercialise a new generation of coordinate measurement technology — built on world-class metrology science, designed for real-world manufacturing.
Our story
Born from world-class metrology
K3Metrology is a spin-out from the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), the UK's National Metrology Institute and one of the world's leading centres for measurement science.
We exist to solve a problem holding back modern manufacturing: the measurement technology industry relies on hasn't kept pace with the demands of Industry 4.0, AI-enhanced production and digital manufacturing. Our mission is to give manufacturers measurement that is fast, flexible and — above all — trustworthy.
That mission is embodied in Metralis, our coordinate measurement system designed for the factory floor.

Our team
Decades of metrology expertise
K3Metrology was founded by two metrologists with a track record of turning measurement science into commercial instruments.
Dr Mike Campbell
Chief Executive Officer
Mike is CEO and co-founder of K3Metrology, leading the commercialisation of Metralis after more than 10 years of research and development at the National Physical Laboratory. A physicist specialising in large-volume, high-accuracy metrology, he has worked with organisations including Airbus, BAE Systems, CERN, ESA and ESO to solve some of industry's most complex measurement challenges.
Prof. Ben Hughes
Chief Technology Officer
Ben is the inventor of Metralis and an internationally recognised leader in dimensional metrology, with more than three decades at the National Physical Laboratory developing instruments from the nanometre scale to systems spanning tens of metres. Three commercial instruments on the market today derive from IP he created at NPL; as CTO he leads the technical vision behind Metralis.
The team
Ben Adeline
Chair
Ben is an entrepreneurial business leader with 15+ years of experience founding, scaling, and advising technology and engineering ventures. Proven success in CEO and NED roles, with deep domain expertise in advanced manufacturing, automation, and commercial strategy. Ben has a strong governance background and a hands-on approach to value creation, innovation, and organisational leadership.
Guy Avery
Head of Engineering
Guy is a technology leader with over 20 years' experience in developing complex hardware and software systems for global markets. He provides a highly valuable combination of hands-on engineering expertise with senior-level leadership to drive high-performance teams and deliver robust, mission-critical products.
Matt Groves
Instrument Scientist
Matt is an instrument scientist whose background in research and practical problem-solving was developed at AMRC Cymru. Drawing on degrees in Biomedical and Aerospace Engineering, his expertise spans large-volume metrology, robotics and automation, mechanical design, and novel applications of virtual reality.
